Byron High School hosts 'Day of Impact'

BYRON – With a grant from the Byron Foundation, Byron High School (BHS) hosted a “Day of Impact” to address the importance of Social Emotional Leaning (SEL).

Schools must teach the whole student if they want to see healthier school climates and improved academic results. They are charged with helping students master academic content and become committed and effective citizens; able to succeed in an increasingly complex world. Yet, many students lack the social and emotional skills they need to learn and grow, or they possess them but require ongoing reinforcement to reach their full potential.

Educators know that teaching students effectively is impossible when pupils are unable to properly engage in the learning process. There are many reasons why a student may fail to engage. With SEL focus, students are taught how to: handle emotions well, relax and focus on learning, avoid negative behaviors, make positive decisions solve problems cooperatively, understand others, and practice empathy and caring.

SEL has three main domains: Affect, Behavior, and Cognition.

A is for Affect: Children who learn about affect, or emotional response, learn how to recognize feelings in themselves and in others, and to communicate about those feelings. Students also learn how to regulate their emotions, which can help in class – emotions make a difference to what is learned and how.

B is for Behavior: SEL also teaches and reinforces positive behavior, such as self-control strategies and relationship skills. Students learn that they are responsible for their own behavior and can stop and calm down instead of acting out. This is great for students and for classroom management.

C is for Cognition: Cognitive or thinking skills are necessary for recognizing problems, taking another's perspective, and coming up with multiple solutions. SEL teaches students about the importance of planning, goal setting, problem solving, and thoughtfully resolving conflict.

The BHS “Day of Impact” began with all students and staff hearing from Mr. Aric Jackson, whose mission is to Teach, Inspire, and Encourage. Jackson was selected as "Best New Speaker" in 2000 by the Chicago Chapter of the International Speech Organization, Toastmasters, has served as the Keynote Speaker for such organizations as Future Business Leaders of America, Health Occupation Students Association, DECA, FCCLA, National Association of Secondary School Principals LEAD Conferences, and many Statewide Student Council Conferences across the country, and his message has been televised in more than 65 countries.

After the inspirational opening, everyone participated in inter-active small groups to practice communication skills and learn the negative impact of "judging a book by its cover.” At the end of the day, everyone reconvened with Jackson who encouraged them and reconfirmed their strength as united individuals.

“Hosting this event brings everyone to a common ground of realizing that they have an impact on someone else … whether positive or negative and they learn how to either improve or magnify that impact,” said Kari Ebens, BHS math teacher and Student Council Advisor.

The hope is that this event will enhance the relationship between students and the community, promote the understanding and sharing of multicultural experiences, and create an awareness and concern for environmental and social issues.
