Byron celebrates park re-opening

BYRON – On Tuesday, Aug. 21, the Byron Park District Board of Commissioners, along with the Byron Chamber of Commerce, celebrated the Grand Re-opening of the Kathryn A. Hamas Memorial Park. 

Members of the Kathryn A. Hamas family, community members and project partners had opportunity to view the completed project that began in the fall of 2017 and concluded with the Grand Re-opening Ceremony.

Hamas Memorial Park was a recipient of the Illinois Department of a Natural Resources Open Space Land and Development grant. The park was regraded and now has a new playground, boat docks, kayak launch, fishing piers, shelter, parking lot, asphalt-walking trails, landscaping and site furnishings.

The Byron Park District Board of Commissioners thanked the many local businesses and government leaders that played a role in the redevelopment project. Partners in the project included:  The City of Byron, Design Perspectives Inc, Chastain & Associates, Irving Construction, Martin & Company, Sjostrom & Sons Inc, Foss Landscaping, Norwest Construction, O’Brien Civil Works, Utility Dynamics Corporation, NW Concrete Inc, Team REIL, Grover Tree Services, Parkreation Inc, NuToys Leisure Products, Sybertech Waste Reduction, Reese Recreation, and Pannier Graphics.

The event featured a ribbon cutting ceremony and light refreshments. The first 50 children that arrived received a free fishing rod, reel, and tackle box. Attendees had an opportunity to enjoy the numerous amenities including the playground, docks, and walking trail.
