FORRESTON – Forreston Junior High School held its annual spelling bee on Friday, Feb. 8.

Students, parents and staff watched as the qualifiers from the Language Arts classes of Mrs. Griseta, Mrs. Leddy and Mrs. Snider competed for the title of top speller. Thirty five students from sixth, seventh and eighth grades took part in the competition.

Miles Gordon and Alex Milnes battled to earn first and second place honors respectively. Seventh grader Miles is the son of Kevin and Natasha Gordon of German Valley. Alex, an eighth grader, is the son of Jeremy and Allison Milnes of Leaf River. After 10 total rounds and one round of head-to-head competition, Miles spelled the words ‘juniper’ and ‘armada’ to earn the championship medal. Alex earned the runner-up spot after correctly spelling ‘clavicle’ but misspelling ‘chilblains’.

Miles will compete in the Lee/Ogle/Whiteside County Regional Spelling Bee held at Dixon High School on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. Alex, as runner-up in the school bee, will be an alternate for the Regional Bee. Congratulations to all the students who competed in the bee, and good luck to MIles and Alex as they represent Forreston Jr/Sr. High School at the Regional Bee in Dixon.
