BYRON – James S. Riley, age 89, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018. He was born Dec. 30, 1928 in Oregon, the son of Leo and Ella (Reinders) Riley. 

He graduated from Byron High School in 1946. Married Janet L. Johnson on Oct. 10, 1970 at the Leaf River United Methodist Church. He was a lifelong farmer and also worked over 25 years for Rockford Blacktop managing their farms and parts delivery dept. He was a member of the United Church of Byron where he had served as a deacon. He was a former member of the Leaf River Lion’s Club. His family was his priority and loved spending time with his grandchildren.  James enjoyed raising his quarter horses, going antiquing, refinishing furniture, traveling, taking long road trips, and playing cards including cribbage and solitaire. 

He was predeceased by his parents, son Patrick Riley and brother Patrick Riley. 

He is survived by his wife Janet of Byron, sister Cleo Straley of Colorado, children: Dennis Riley of Oregon, Sue (Dick) Rock of Springfield, Chris Lindstrom of Madison, Wis., Cathy Howe of Berthoud, Colo., Eric Nelson of Dixon, David Nelson of Winston, Ga., Karen (Robert) Borneman of Leaf River, 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews 

A memorial service was held Sat., Aug. 11, 2018 at the United Church of Byron with the Dr. Jesse Tanner pastor of the church officiating. The family was available to greet friends and family following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is established for the United Church of Byron or Pegasus Special Riders, of Oregon. Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home of Byron, is assisting the family.
