Oregon students get down to business

OREGON – The Oregon High School Social Entrepreneurship program held its Student Startup Showcase on Wednesday, Dec. 12 in the Scoops "Secret Stache" room.

Twenty high school seniors pitched their business plans and prototypes to raise capital for their second-semester businesses. Each business had to meet the three criteria of the program: the business must have a social benefit as its foundation, must be entirely student-created, and must be operable during class time.

Student businesses ranged from blankets to baked goods, from motor sports to social media marketing.

"These kids put in an incredible amount of work, and it shows," said program instructor Aaron Sitze. "We're lucky to have a commmunity and a school district that encourages this type of innovation."

With their businesses funded and their models secured, students will learn branding, marketing, accounting, and website creation during second semester as they take and fill orders.
