HANOVER – Richard Allen Sass, 70, of Hanover, passed away Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.

Cremation Rites have been accorded. A memorial gathering will be held Thursday, Dec. 28, 2017 from 10 a.m.-noon at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover, with luncheon to follow at the Hanover VFW. A memorial fund has been established in Richard’s memory. Family and friends are invited to share in Richard’s life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.

Richard was born Oct. 28, 1947, in Freeport, the son of Henry and Alice (Moore) Sass. He attended Shannon High School, graduating with the Class of 1965. After high school, Richard was drafted into the United States Army to serve during the Vietnam War. He married Debra Klapp on April 12, 1990.

Richard worked for Harns Construction in Freeport for several years. He later farmed and milked cows for the Ellis Farm in Forreston. He was a member of the American Legion and the Shannon Bowling League. He enjoyed camping, going out to eat, watching westerns, doing crossword puzzles, watching NASCAR, going on road trips, and in his youth, drag racing.

Richard will be dearly missed by his wife, Debra; one daughter, Katherine (Jonathan) Garman-Taber of Freeport; two grandchildren, Kristina and Cody Parsons; one great-granddaughter, Aliyah Parsons; and three sisters, Saranne (Greg) Stamm of Afolkey, Illinois, Kay (Richard) Sweitzer of Lanark, Illinois and Donna (Carl) Ward of Loran, Illinois.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alice; one sister, Gloria Dyer; a brother, Dennis Sass; a nephew, Mark Sweitzer; and one sister-in-law, Judy Sass.
