Richard (Toby) Lee Way

STILLMAN VALLEY — Richard (Toby) Lee Way, 82, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on Feb. 17. He was born in Rockford on March 30, 1940, the son of Violet (Rubow) and Burton Way. After graduating from Lakeland High School in Minocqua, Wisconsin in 1958, Toby attended one semester of college before enlisting in the US Air Force. He served in Korea from 1959-1962. Upon returning home he met the love of his life Patsy Ann Capes, they married on May 25, 1963 and were lifelong residents of Stillman Valley. Toby worked and was a stockholder at Quality Metal Finishing Company in Byron until he retired in 2002. Toby served on the board of directors at the Village of Progress for 20 years. He was a member of the VFW Post 8739 in Oregon. Toby enjoyed his retirement traveling and spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them life lessons. If you didn’t find him in his shed building a project for someone, you would find him on the golf course. Toby will be missed and is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Pat (Byron), daughter Brandie Messer (Stillman Valley); son Toby (Amy) Way Jr, (Phoeniz, Arizona); four grandchildren Brett (Emily Lund) Messer, Devan (Seth) Kuss (Stillman Valley); Cody (Lacey) Way, Samuel (Riley Ferguson) Way (Phoenix); and two great granddaughters Remi Way (Phoenix) and Reagan Kuss (Stillman Valley). He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Bud Way, Sue Nevel, Pat Huls & Tom Way; his son-in-law Steve Messer and grandson Douglas Way. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Village of Progress. A celebration of life will be held in Toby’s honor on March 19, 2023 from 1-4 p.m. at Fritz’s Wooden Nickel in Stillman Valley.
