MOUNT MORRIS – With thousands of visitors and more than 2,500 total peoples choice votes cast, the first place winner of the 2017 U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition was “Straw-bear-y,” by sculptor Kate Fitch.
Finishing in second place was “Ballerina,” by sculptor Fran Volz and in third place was “It's On Like 'Straw'nkey Kong,” by sculptor Danica Rogers and Seth Gittleson.
Eight Straw Sculptors from Illinois and Wisconsin competed in the competition, hosted by ENCORE! Mt. Morris. The event ran fron Aug. 11-27.
Planning is underway for 2018 to expand the reach for sculptors and grow this event, scheduled annually in August at it’s new permanent home on the Mount Morris Campus.
