POLO — Isabella Bergstrom was recently named the December Student of the Month at Polo Community High School and received a scholarship from the Polo Schools Foundation for her efforts. She is the daughter of Janette and Phil Krontz and Chris and Jennifer Bergstrom.
Bergstrom’s extracurricular activities include cheerleading, track & field, FCCLA, Student Council, National Honor Society, FFA, Spanish Club, and Varsity Club. After high school, she plans to pursue a career in the medical field. Upon winning the award, Bergstrom filled out a list of questions about her school experience.
What does it take to be a successful high school student?
-Do all homework and assignments on time and do not procrastinate. Also stay involved in activities and clubs inside and outside of school. It is important to keep an appropriate school/life balance to avoid getting burnt out.
What class do you find really engaging and why?
-The class I find most engaging is Advanced Biology taught by Gina Cole. I feel that it really challenges me academically and the material is very interesting. We perform many hands-on labs that allow us to observe and study different kinds of cells.
What are your career and post-graduation plans?
-I am going to Iowa State University to major in biology. I plan to have a career in the medical field, but I am still unsure about what expertise. In the summer months after graduation I am working at Subway to save up for college.
What are your two favorite extracurricular, volunteer or community activities you participate in?
-One of my favorite extracurricular activities is track and field. Polo is coed with Forreston for track and I enjoy being able to meet new people, both on the team and at track meets. Meredith Wolber is a great throwing coach and really makes me challenge and push myself to keep getting better. Another activity I enjoy is being involved in our school's Student Council. I love being able to make a difference in our community with things like the blood drive, doggy dash, and elderbuddy.
Please share a moment, group event or activity at school that was meaningful or memorable.
-Delivering the elderbuddy items to the nursing home was an amazing experience. It was so wonderful to give the residents gifts for Christmas and see them sing along to Christmas carols with us. It was such a sweet and joyful encounter that I will never forget.
What is your hope for the future?
-After college I wish to find a stable and stimulating job. I hope to have a family and children and live a long, healthy life.
