BYRON – The Byron Park District recently acquired 10 acres of riverfront property on the southwest side of Byron.
The property was purchased from the Johnson family in January of 2019 and has been named Donald B. Johnson Riverfront Park. A portion of the purchase was paid by a grant from the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund, which was awarded through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
The Park District will soon begin planning for development of the property into a neighborhood park.
“I grew up in the adjacent neighborhood and spent many of my childhood days fishing and playing with friends on this property,” said Byron Park District Board President Scott Jeffrey. “I’m excited to add this property to the Park District and I look forward to developing the property further so that current and future generations of Byron residents can enjoy the property in the same way that my friends and I did.”
