John Dale Henricks

MOUNT MORRIS – John Dale Henricks died on March 13, 2019. He was born in La Place, Ill., on April 7, 1920 to Eldo and Lela (Shively) Henricks. He and his family moved to Mount Morris while he was a young boy. Growing up, his loves were playing basketball and music. He played French horn in many bands and orchestras including the Mount Morris summer band until he and Margaret moved to San Diego. He also was always involved in church choirs.

Dale attended the University of Illinois, studying engineering, for two years before transferring to Manchester College, where he met Margaret, graduating in 1942. He taught at the Pentagon for about two years before joining the Army. That was a tough decision because his father was a minister in, and the family grew up as, members of the Church of the Brethren which was a peace church.

Margaret Alice Jackson died on June 21, 2013. She was born in Wabash, Indiana on Jan. 4, 1921 to Leroy and Ruth (Spencer) Jackson. She grew up in South Whitley and Larwill, Indiana. Her father was a farmer and her mother was a teacher. Margaret attended Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana and graduated with a degree in teaching. Her first teaching job was in Porter, Indiana.

On a three-day pass Dale and Margaret were married in Porter, Ind., on Feb. 4, 1944. They then moved to Aberdeen, Maryland where Dale was stationed. Their oldest son John was born there on July 14, 1945. Dale worked with a group to develop the bazooka. He was reassigned to Camp Beal, Calif., and then sent to Okinawa, Japan. En route to Okinawa they received word Japan had surrendered. Upon his discharge from the Army, Dale and Margaret moved to Mount Morris and settled in the Henricks family house on Brayton Rd. Dale went to work for Kable News Co. and Margaret stayed home with their five children until Steve, the youngest, was in school full time. She then taught at Mount Morris Elementary School for over 25 years. In 1980, they moved to San Diego, Calif. They spent 29 very happy years there making many friends through their church. In 2009, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., to be near family.

Dale was predeceased by his parents Eldo and Lela Henricks and his brother Merle. Margaret was predeceased by her parents Leroy and Ruth Jackson. They were both predeceased by their youngest son, Steve.

They are survived by sons John, Bob (Janis), Jim and daughter Vicky (Jeff) Stoner and grandchildren Eric (Meli) Henricks, Joshua Henricks, Rachel Embery, Jay (Kerry) Stoner and three great grandchildren.

Their memorial service will be 1:30 Sunday, July 7 at the Mount Morris Church of the Brethren. There will be a fellowship time following the service after which internment will be in Plainview Cemetary, Mount Morris. It was their request that one service be held for both of them.

Memorials may be made to the Mount Morris Church of the Brethren.
