Dear editor,
We are a nation on the move. Over my lifetime I have moved four times for work-related reasons. Now retired I am considering moving either because of climate or to be nearer to family. Moving about is a current world-wide trend. It is known as migration. People migrate for reasons noted above as well for personal health and safety, better living, to escape poverty and oppression.
While I am free to move about the country as I see fit, this is not the case for all. We have declared through our immigration laws that skin color and country of origin matter. If you are from the southern American hemisphere you are not welcome. Lady Liberty is only for those of European heritage, A border wall and razor wire symbolize all others migrant status. Consider the use of Federal funds and the expenditure of political capital to enforce a ban on the insistent human desire to breathe free air and live in the land of sanctuary.
These two traits uphold our American ideals and values. Now many must fear being seized, detained and deported while they walk the streets of Ogle County villages and towns. I am astounded that a local legislator vows to stop "illegal" immigration and actively deport these human beings. Oppressive laws and regulations, dehumanization and humiliation will not stop the very strong urge to provide for those whom you love and have an obligation to provide care. Small mindedness, self-centeredness and ignorance do not serve us well. In our current practice, we would be better served to seek to welcome the stranger in need and seek to be the shining city on the hill.
