POLO — Allissa Marschang was recently named the December Student of the Month at Polo Community High School and received a scholarship from the Polo Schools Foundation for her efforts. She is the daughter of Ray and Rebecca Marschang.

Marschang's extracurricular activities include Spanish Club, sports and more. After high school, she hopes to attend college and get a degree in engineering.

Upon winning the award, Marschang filled out a list of questions about her school experience.

What does it take to be a successful high school student?

Have motivation, surround yourself with good people, and push yourself.

What class do you find really engaging and why?

Physics with Gina Cole has been the most engaging class this year. Physics is very interesting to me, because I love to learn about how things work. We learn about the force of gravity as well as motion. Just last week, my class conducted an online lab about forces and motion. I enjoyed this lab because I could see the numbers I calculated come to life when I clicked the play button. My favorite part about this particular lab was the three stars that popped up on the screen when the answers I put were correct.

What are your career and post-graduation plans?

After I graduate high school, I plan to pursue my career of interest: engineering. When I am older, I want to use my secondary education to help people. Engineers create so many important buildings and machines. I want to be a part of their world; to create things that allow the rest of the population to not worry about issues they cannot control. I would love to have the opportunity to attend school at Purdue University in Indiana. The campus is beautiful and their engineering program is very impressive.

What are your two favorite extracurricular, volunteer or community activities you participate in?

Youth group and volunteering at Kidz Cafè. Youth group allows me to share my ideas and feelings without judgment. The rest of the kids who attend are very caring and mature. They understand how important it is to be supportive or give constructive criticism when needed. They’re like a second family. I have been volunteering at Kidz Cafè for two years now, and I love seeing all the kids every time they come in. It’s a great opportunity for me to interact with members of my community that I don’t see all the time. I enjoy making food in the kitchen with people I’ve known forever. Overall these experiences have taught me how to be respectful, caring and supportive. I enjoy doing these because I feel like they give me purpose.

Please share a moment, group event or activity at school that was meaningful or memorable.

Trips to Chicago with the Spanish Club.

What is your hope for the future?

I want to have a big and healthy family, with a loving husband and a job I love.
