OREGON – An Oregon woman has been charged with killing her 7-year-old son on Feb. 17.
Sarah L. Safranek was arrested by Oregon Police on Wednesday, April 21 and charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child, according to Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock.
Safranek, 34, was being held on a $2 million bond at the Ogle County Jail.
“I’ve got to commend the Oregon Police Department for doing a very thorough investigation that they brought us,” Rock said at a press conference at the Oregon Police Department on April 21, where the arrest and charges were announced. “And any time that you are exhausting every possible lead on a case it does take some time.”
Oregon Police responded the home at 403 S. 10th St. for a child, Nathaniel Burton, who was not breathing. He was taken to KSD Hospital in Dixon where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy showed that they boy had died as a result of suffocation.
Rock said that there were three people in the house, including the boy, at the time of the death. But he said at this time, they anticipate that only Safranek will be charged.
If convicted of all charges, she faces up to life in prison.
