STILLMAN VALLEY – Josephine D. Maas, age 103, died Monday, July 2, 2018 at Generations at Neighbor’s in Byron. She was born April 15, 1915 near Stillman Valley, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Mennenga) Bulthaus. 

She married Paul J. Maas, Sr. on March 10, 1937 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church Parsonage, he preceded her in 1994. She and her husband Paul farmed and raised their family near Stillman Valley. She also worked for 8 years for the Meridian School District Cafeteria Dept.  Josephine was a lifelong member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church and was an honorary member of the Ladies Aid.  She also sang in the church choir for 30 years. She loved to bake pies. 

Josephine is survived by her son Paul (Mary) Maas, Jr. of Byron, daughter Jacquelyn Schumacher of Stillman Valley, 5 grandchildren: Vickie (Greg) Hilliard of Stillman Valley, Natalie (Michael) Haugse of Stillman Valley, Neysa (Stephen) McCammond of Stillman Valley, Kim Osterman of Tampa, Fla., and Scott Maas of Byron, 9 great grandchildren: Michelle (Kyle) Miller, Karl, Savanna, Michael II , Valerie, Nile, Jennifer, Anthony (AJ), and Blake.

She was predeceased by her husband Paul, son-in-law Roger Schumacher, and 4 sisters: Anna Elliot, Grace Blumeyer, Jeanette Garkey, and Ella VanBriesen. 

Funeral service was 11 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church near Oregon with the Rev. Marv Jacobs officiating. Burial was at the Ebenezer Cemetery. Visitation was prior to the service on Saturday at the church from 9:30-11 a.m. A memorial fund is established for the Serenity Hospice and Home.
