A passerby alerted a family that their house was on fire early this morning.

Two people, and their pets, were able to escape the burning house, located west of Chana Road on IL Route 64, said Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup.

Knoup said his department got the call at 1:28 a.m. Thursday, and was the first on the scene. He said the outside front corner of the house was on fire and flames could be seen inside the home as well.

While the exact cause is under investigation, Knoup said it appears to have been electrical. He said the home suffered “at least” $50,000 in damage, as there is smoke damage throughout the structure.

The two-alarm fire included departments from Mount Morris, Stillman Valley, Rochelle, Byron, Franklin Grove, Lynn-Scott-Rock, Flagg Center and Ashton.

“I think the crew did an excellent job getting a stop on it,” Knoup said, adding that in another five minutes it would have been, “a fully engulfed house fire.”
