The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering several free outdoor activities to get you outside in January.
The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering a free Winter Animal Tracking Program on Saturday, Jan. 11 from noon-1 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve located at 7993 North River Road in Byron. Learn to track our many active winter animals in the snow, mud or sand and identify their tracks, scat and chew patterns as we hike through the prairie and woodlands at the preserve. This program will be led by Assistant Superintendent of Education Janet Dahlberg. Advance registration is required be Wednesday, January 8 by calling 815 234-8535, Ext. 200.
The Byron Forest Preserve will be offering a free interactive Native Americans on the Prairie drop in program on Sunday, Jan. 12 from noon-4 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center located at 7993 North River Road in Byron. Drop in any time to check out our Native American and bison artifacts, hear stories, play games, and make traditional crafts such as nettle cordage. You can also try to light a fire with a bow drill and learn other fire starting skills. No advance registration is required. Open for all ages. Call 815 234-8535, Ext. 200for more information.
The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering a free Bald Hill Winter Walking Tour at their Bald Hill Prairie Preserve located at 5502 North Silver Creek Road, Mount Morris on Saturday, January 18 from 10 a.m.-noon. Join Superintendent of Education, Mark Herman, for a guided walking tour of the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve to see the Illinois Big Tree Champion and all of the recent conservation work that has been done by our Restoration Department. Advance registration is required by Thursday, January 16 by calling 815 234-8535, Ext. 200. For hearty hikers age 10 and up. Be prepared for several steep hills and dress for the weather. We will be meeting at the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve parking lot.
