DeVries earns award

BYRON – Jackie DeVries, retired Byron Middle School teacher, received the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers Honorary Membership Award at the ISPE annual convention in Lisle on July 26. 

Honorary Membership is granted to a person who either has attained eminence in engineering or the related sciences or has rendered outstanding service to the engineering profession. DeVries worked as a mathematics teacher and taught math and reading for the academically talented program at Byron Middle School, as well as an adjunct professor in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Rockford College.  She worked with teachers and administrators to meet the academic needs of students in the Byron School District, worked to promote MathCounts activities, teamwork and mentoring and to increase student development and enthusiasm for learning. 

DeVries has received the Byron Middle School Educator of the Year award and was recognized by the ISPE Rock River Chapter for her 29 years of dedication to MathCounts. DeVries previously received the ISPE Joint Honors Award for Illinois and the Rock River Chapter.  

The Honorary Membership nomination noted herexceptional dedication and devotion to her students in helping motivate in the areas of mathematics, problem solving and making mathematics exciting and fun. 

DeVries retired from 30 years of teaching at Byron School District in June 2018.
