MOUNT MORRIS – Bernard Jeffrey Ackland, 75, beloved son, brother, classmate, teacher, friend, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at his home in Mount Morris with his family at his side. He was born on Dec. 7, 1944 in Rochelle, the son of Baldwin “Jeff” and Helen (Crull) Ackland.
He married Margo Lynn Swope on July 12, 1969 in Compton, Ill. Bernard was a 1962 graduate of Rochelle Township High School, earning his BS degree from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville in 1967, and then his MSE degree in 1972 from the Northern Illinois University.
From 1968 to 1973, he taught school at Franklin Grove Elementary. From 1973 to 1979, he was the manager of the Welland grain elevator, and then from 1979 to 2001 he worked for Honeywell as a product specialist, where he had one of his inventions patented.
Bernard was a member of the NEA and was honored to have an article published in their national magazine. He’s been a Sunday School Teacher and member of the household of faith at Pinecreek Independent Church, Polo. He’s had a deep love for the Word of God.
Bernard is survived by his wife of over fifty years, Margo; three children, Ginger (Ryan) O’Rourke of Oregon, Melanie (Martin II) Hey of Hoffman Estates, and Brian (Jeanette) Ackland of Schaumburg; six grandchildren: Taylor, Blake, and Jordan Ackland, Martin and Tristan Hey, and Grey O’Rourke; and a brother, Gary (Susan) Ackland. He was predeceased by both parents.
A private family funeral service will be held at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home in Rochelle. Burial will follow the service at Lawnridge Cemetery. Contributions in Bernard’s memory may be directed to Serenity Hospice and Home or Pinecreek Independent Church.
